Mayor de Blasio’s decision to drop the appeal of the judicial order to reform New York City’s stop and frisk practices is thoughtful, wise and courageous. For too long so many in our minority communities have been degraded by this corrosive policy that has undermined our neighborhoods and victimized citizens for no other reason than the color of their skin. I know Mayor de Blasio, our Assembly Majority conference, all of our community leaders and citizens share the same goal: to make our streets as safe as possible. In doing so, we must be careful not to give up the freedoms for which so many have sacrificed throughout our great country’s history. I hope that with this decision we can now focus on crafting policies and practices that work equally for all New Yorkers and create safer communities.
