Assembly Majority Welcomes Two New Members

Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie welcomed Alice Cancel and Jaime Williams to the Majority Conference following their victories in a special election held on April 19th.

"The Assembly Majority is dedicated to fighting for the needs of hardworking New York families and we are proud to welcome two exceptional new women to our conference to help us reach that goal," said Heastie. "Our Legislature currently holds a record number of women, and with so many of the challenges our state faces affecting women and families, their voices are immeasurably valuable."

Alice Cancel will represent constituents of the 65th Assembly District in Lower Manhattan. Born in Puerto Rico, Assemblymember Cancel migrated to the South Bronx with her family and later moved to the Lower East Side in the 1970s where she has raised three sons and has lived ever since. For 26 years, she has served as the district leader in the area that is now known as the 65th Assembly District. Over the course of her service to Manhattan, Assemblymember Cancel has been a fierce advocate for affordable housing and local school districts.

Jaime Williams will represent the 59th Assembly District, encompassing the neighborhoods of Canarsie, Georgetown, Mill Basin, Marine Park and Gerristen Beach. Originally from Trinidad and Tobago, Assemblymember Wiliams moved to New York City in 1999. She is very passionate about giving back to her community. The newly-elected Assemblywoman is a member of the Canarsie Lions Club, the 69th Precinct Community Council and has over eight years of experience counseling women and children that are victims of domestic violence.
