  TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the highway law, in relation to designating a portion of the state highway system as the "Dr. John Flateau Memorial Highway"   PURPOSE OR GENERAL IDEA OF BILL: To rename a portion of NY Route 27 to be known as the "Dr. John Flateau Memorial Highway"   SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS: Section 1 adds section 344-p to the highway law to rename a portion of NYS highway to "Dr. John Flateau Memorial Highway" Section 2 requires the commissioner of transportation to install adequate signage and maintenance of the highway system Section 3 sets the effective date   JUSTIFICATION: Dr. John Flateau, a revered figure from Brooklyn, leaves behind a profound legacy marked by his tireless advocacy for social justice, education, and community empowerment. As a distinguished professor, activist, and mentor, Dr. Flateau dedicated his life to advancing the cause of equality and uplifting marginalized voices in society. His pioneering work in promoting diversity and inclusion within educational institutions, particularly at Medgar Evers College, where he served as a founding faculty member, has left an indelible mark on the Brooklyn community and beyond. Dr. Flateau's commitment to fostering dialogue, understanding, and cooperation among people of diverse backgrounds has helped bridge divides and build stronger, more resilient communities. His legacy serves as an enduring inspiration for future generations to continue the fight for justice and equality, ensuring that his contrib- utions to the betterment of society are remembered and honored for years to come. It is for these reasons that we should rename a section of the NYS highway in memory of him so there will forever be a physical remind- er of the work and dedication he had to bettering his community.   PRIOR LEGISLATIVE EISTORY: New bill.   FISCAL IMPLICATIONS FOR STATE AND LOCAL GOVERNMENTS: None.   EFFECTIVE DATE: Immediately.
