NEW YORK STATE ASSEMBLY MEMORANDUM IN SUPPORT OF LEGISLATION submitted in accordance with Assembly Rule III, Sec 1(f)

BILL NUMBER: A7717A
SPONSOR: DenDekker

TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the military law, in relation to the
termination without penalty of certain service contracts

PURPOSE:
To allow active duty service members to terminate without penalty
certain service contracts; for example, cable, internet, and health club
memberships

SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS:
Section 1. Amends military law
Section 2. Sets the effective date

JUSTIFICATION:
Active duty military personnel make many sacrifices in service to our
state and nation. Sometimes they are called to duty without significant
notice and need ensure that while in service to our country they are not
paying for services they are not using. There currently is no law in New
York State that allows protections for military personnel to cancel
certain services without penalty. Service members many times cannot
cancel memberships when they need to, or they need to pay exorbitant
fees to place accounts on hold. This bill would allow qualifying active
duty members to be able to cancel or reinstate services by providing
orders that show they have been called up into active duty.
