Today, at a press conference in Albany, Assemblyman Andrew Raia (R,I,C-East Northport) joined Assembly Minority Leader Brian Kolb (R,C-Canandaigua) and educators from across the state to demand that Gov. Cuomo release school aid budget information. Raia criticized Cuomo’s political tactics, explaining that holding this information hostage unnecessarily hurts the children and taxpayers of Long Island. “Withholding school aid numbers as a negotiating tactic is downright despicable,” said Raia. “The governor is playing political games with the students of New York in order to force his radical teacher evaluation system through the legislature. Delaying the release of funding estimates greatly impedes the budget process for every school in the state. We are demanding that he release the school aid numbers immediately.” In his state of the state budget address, Gov. Cuomo proposed a school aid increase on the condition that legislators enact a new teacher evaluation system based more heavily on standardized testing. Raia has been an opponent of Annual Professional Performance Reviews (APPR), standardized testing, and Common Core for a number of years.
