McDonough Issues Urgent Call for Organ Donors, Making Lauren’s Law Permanent

Assemblyman Dave McDonough (R,C,I-Merrick) is urging New Yorkers across the state to register as organ donors in order to increase the availability of life-saving transplants. As a result, McDonough is also calling for an immediate vote on legislation which he co-sponsors that would make Lauren’s Law permanent. Named after a 12- year-old girl who received a life-saving heart transplant, this legislation would require residents who apply for a state driver’s license, identification card or renewal to answer whether they wish to become part of the Donate Life Registry or skip the question.

“This is a simple thing people can do which could ultimately save the lives of up to seven individuals in need of a transplant,” McDonough said. “It is embarrassing that New York ranks last in the U.S. according to the Organ Donor Network, and many lives are lost each year due to this injustice. Lauren is just one example of the miracles that can be achieved by unselfishly becoming an organ donor and letting others live on after we pass away. I am calling on Assembly leadership to follow the Senate lead and make Lauren’s Law permanent immediately.”
