Assemblywoman Solages Celebrates Nelson Mandela International Day

Celebrate Mandela International Day this year with Assemblywoman Solages.

Elmont, New York – Every year on July 18, the day of Nelson Mandela’s birth, the world pauses for 67 minutes to honor the sixty-seven years of Nelson Mandela’s life. Mr. Mandela devoted his life to serving the public as a human rights activist, he was an international peacemaker and the first democratically elected president of South Africa.

Inspired by the recently departed author Nadine Gordimer, Mr. Mandela was determined to crusade against injustice. “In the midst of the apartheid in South Africa, Nelson Mandela stood against racial prejudice and bias. From prisoner to president to international peace maker, Nelson Mandela will always be remembered for his values of democracy, freedom, and equality. The world must remember his legacy especially on his birthday,” said Assemblywoman Solages.

Nelson Mandela International Day is not only a day devoted to commemorating Nelson Mandela’s life, but a day to remember Mr. Mandela’s tireless humanitarian work as well. Recognizing Nelson Mandela’s core values, this day is dedicated to raising global awareness and creating a culture of peace throughout the world.

Activists around the world commemorate July 18th through various philanthropic events such as rebuilding homes, offering school supplies for children, preparing meals for the elderly, helping out in orphanages, and beautifying parks. Assemblywoman Solages encourages New Yorkers to participate and match the Mandela Day motto – “Take action. Inspire change. Make every day a Mandela Day.”
