Albany, NY - The New York State Assembly, led by its Haitian-American Caucus, will mark the seventh anniversary of the earthquake in Haiti and pays tribute to the more than 200,000 victims who perished in this tragedy.

The New York State Assembly paused its deliberation on Wednesday to remember those affected by the devastating 2010 earthquake. Assemblyman Vanel led the commemoration of Resolution K13, sponsored by Assemblywoman Michaelle Solages. Assemblyman Vanel described his experiences as a relief worker in Port-au-Prince during the earthquake, and also called for a stable and prosperous future for Haiti. Assemblymember Rodneyse Bichotte and Kimberly Jean-Pierre co-sponsored the resolution.

"Seven years ago, a devastating earthquake of historic magnitude changed the lives of many families in Haiti and abroad," stated Assemblywoman Michaelle Solages. "Our mother country has had to endure many setbacks. However, we cannot lose hope. On this day, we stand in solidarity and solemn remembrance with Haitians everywhere."

"No matter how many years have passed, the devastation of the 2010 earthquake in Haiti has not diminished," said Assemblymember Rodneyse Bichotte. "It is hard to erase the loss of so many hundreds of thousands of people, not to mention the mass displacement of millions especially because there are still reminders everywhere - the half-destroyed buildings, people still living in tents, the fragile infrastructure that has been made even worse due to the effects of Hurricane Matthew and the cholera epidemic. But through it all, you see examples of self-determination and resilience whereby people have taken their fate into their own hands to rebuild their communities and themselves where governments, nonprofits, and creditors have failed. So today, I pause to remember and reflect on that day and I pray that Haiti will finally get a reprieve from all of her suffering."

"As Americans and New Yorkers, we are no strangers to natural disasters. Many from around the world have supported us at our times of need. We lend support and prayers for Haiti."

As each year passes it is important that we, as a community, work to ensure that the memories of those lost during the earthquake are not forgotten. Even as Haiti continues to suffer from the after-effects of the natural disasters, the strength and resilience of her people is a reminder of the historical fortitude of this nation.
