Statement: Providing Professional and Occupational Licenses for Immigrants

March 7, 2017
“I have introduced legislation amending the state Education Law to help reduce barriers facing immigrants from obtaining professional licenses. This legislation not only removes bars to licensing but would also reduce labor shortages by permitting skilled immigrants to enter the job market.

My legislation will allow immigrants to obtain professional licenses after providing a federal Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) or Social Security Number (SSN) to the Department of Education.

We should not be penalizing skilled and qualified individuals from obtaining professional positions that would benefit the economy, increase tax revenues and improve the quality of life for New Yorkers.”
