Barclay, Oaks Congratulate WRVO on Winning Edward R. Murrow Award with Legislative Resolutions

SUNY Oswego-based NPR affiliate WRVO was recently presented with state resolutions honoring the station for receiving the 2014 regional Edward R. Murrow Award. The local station received the award for its 51-minute documentary titled “New York in the World.”

The documentary showcases many different parts of New York, including fashion in New York City and unions in Buffalo. The piece focuses on how all of these different businesses and areas work through economic realities, which, lately, haven’t been that positive. According to the documentary, Upstate New York is an area which has traditionally depended on manufacturing jobs, but those manufacturing jobs were reduced from 40% in 1975 to 10% in recent years.

Assemblyman Will Barclay (R,C,I—Pulaski) congratulated the team on their achievement. “I am happy to present this state resolution to the team at WRVO who worked so hard on this documentary, and, in turn, for doing such hard work, has received the regional Edward R. Murrow Award. WRVO has shined a bright light on the people of New York by showcasing everyday residents in our current economic climate,” said Barclay.

Assemblyman Bob Oaks (R,C—Macedon) said, “This recognition received by WRVO is indicative of the high quality of programming central New Yorkers receive each day. Congratulations to the entire WRVO team on this accomplishment.”

Late SUNY Oswego senior fellow and veteran journalist Garrick Utley was a driving force behind the project. Utley was host of the show and collaborated over the last year with WRVO to produce the broadcast. As head of the SUNY Levin Institute, Utley commissioned research which stands as the basis for this documentary. Utley passed away last February due to illness. He was previously a news correspondent for NBC, ABC, and worked as a contributor for CNN.

The Edward R. Murrow Award is named after the legendary journalist who was Director of Talks for CBS in 1935 and worked for the network until 1961. The Edward R. Murrow Award is presented annually by the national Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) to honor outstanding achievements in electronic journalism.
