Assemblyman Stirpe: New York Buy American Act Boosts Manufacturing, Local Economy and Job Growth

Assemblyman Al Stirpe (D-Cicero) announced the New York Buy American Act, which he co-sponsored, to strengthen local and national iron and steel manufacturing industries passed the Assembly (A.8427-A). By ensuring our state roads and bridges are made with American-made steel and iron, Stirpe is strengthening manufacturing and revitalizing one of Central New York’s top employment sectors.

“Here in Central New York, we put local businesses first and support our family, friends and neighbors,” Stirpe said. “We shop at the farmers markets, patronize the mom-and-pop diners and frequent our Main Street shops. The state is adopting that same mentality to boost American businesses, which will make a real difference for Central New York manufacturers.”

The New York Buy American Act requires that contracts over $1 million for state road and bridge construction and repair by certain state agencies use American steel and iron. This will help support state and national manufacturers and ensure that taxpayer-funded projects reinvest in our economy to create more decent-paying jobs.

As a member of the Assembly Committee on Economic Development, Job Creation, Commerce and Industry, Stirpe has been a staunch advocate for local businesses and has worked tirelessly to ensure they can thrive. The Buy American Act is a step in the right direction and will directly help Central New York, Stirpe noted.
