Assemblyman Mike Norris (R,I-Lockport) joined Assemblyman Marc Butler (R,C,I,Ref-Newport), state Senator Rob Ortt (R,C,I-Tonawanda), New York State Rifle and Pistol Association President Tom King and NY S.C.O.P.E. President Tom Reynolds and others at a press conference today introducing legislation (A.6140) that would repeal the NY SAFE Act in counties outside of New York City. “In Western New York where there are significant rural areas and hunting is a part of life, the SAFE Act continues to violate many of my constituents’ constitutional rights. I am proud to be a sponsor of this bill and to work together with my colleagues toward its repeal,” said Norris, who is one of the sponsors of the legislation. “There are many parts of state law that apply only to New York City, such as the phasing in of the new minimum wage, ridesharing or the recently passed bag tax. Western New Yorkers are tired of hearing downstate leaders make exemptions for, or give preference to, New York City when it works in their favor but hurts the rest of the state. Repealing the SAFE Act outside of New York City makes sense.” The bill is currently before the Assembly Codes Committee for review, and would take effect immediately if enacted. Norris encourages citizens who support this legislation to contact the Chair of the Assembly Codes Committee Assemblyman Joseph Lentol (D-Brooklyn) to express hope that the committee will take action toward bringing the bill into law.
