Assemblyman Santabarbara: New York State’s "Homes for Heroes" Program Creates More Affordable, Accessible Housing for Disabled Veterans

In honor of Flag Day and all veterans, Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara announced a new program that will assist veterans with physical challenges who need modifications to their homes in order to live independently.

New York State’s “Homes for Heroes” program established this year provides funding to help veterans live safely, comfortably and productively in the setting of their choice. Santabarbara who served in the US Army Reserve and is a member of the State Assembly’s Committee on Veterans’ Affairs advocated for the program in the NY State Assembly. Through the program, grants will be provided to not-for-profits and municipalities to help retrofit homes for disabled veterans. The program will be administered by the New York State Division of Veterans’ Affairs. Veterans can obtain more information about the program by calling 1.888.838.7697 or online at DVAInfo@veterans.ny.gov.

“New York State is proudly home to one of the largest veteran populations in the country, with over 900,000 veterans residing in the Empire State,” said Assemblyman Santabarbara. “Far too many are left with the physical challenges brought on by their service protecting our country and the freedoms we hold so dear”, Assemblyman Santabarbara said. “While no one can ever say thank you enough, this initiative will offer our support to help our veteran population here in New York live independently and in their own communities.”

“We also have an aging population of World War II, Korean War, and Vietnam War veterans who may need wheelchair ramps, and other changes to the physical design of their homes,” Santabarbara added. “Modifications can often be costly for seniors and those on fixed incomes and providing them the assistance they need will better allow them to stay near friends and family.”
