Assemblywoman Pellegrino: Legislation Provides Victims of Sexual Abuse the Justice They Deserve

June 7, 2017

“As a mother and educator, I find the current statute of limitations on child sexual abuse to be completely unacceptable. Victims of sexual abuse are often left with long-term mental, emotional and sometimes physical scars, and it can take them years to process what happened to them and come forward. Yet here in New York we provide them only a brief period of time to take legal action. We must do more to help victims heal when they’re ready to do so, regardless of their age. This bill will also ensure the people who commit these horrendous crimes are held accountable for their behavior.

“By extending the statute of limitations for childhood sexual abuse cases, the legislation passed today will allow more victims to seek the justice they deserve, while also protecting future victims from repeat offenders.”
