Stec: I Will Not Support Free Tablets for Inmates

February 1, 2018

Assemblyman Dan Stec (R,C,I-Queensbury) said he is concerned about a new proposal announced by the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS) in which inmates would receive tablets free of charge. The tablets would be supplied by JPay and be handed out this summer.

“So many hard-working, middle-class New Yorkers struggle to buy their children school supplies, let alone tablets, yet we are going to provide them to inmates free of charge,” said Stec. “This is a slap in the face to those hard-working, law-abiding taxpayers. If companies want to give out free tablets we should find a way for it to benefit our students.”

JPay says that as of right now, 14 states are participating in the program with the possibility of three more providing the service in the coming months.

“This is an initiative I will not be supporting,” said Stec. “I cannot support a program that puts inmates before our children. I strongly recommend that DOCCS reconsider this decision.”
