Stec Reminds Residents of FASNY’S Recruit NY Weekend
Assemblyman Dan Stec (R,C,I-Queensbury) reminded residents today about the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York’s (FASNY) annual Recruit NY initiative, which will take place this Saturday, April 28 and Sunday, April 29. The event is an annual statewide push to help local volunteer fire departments recruit volunteers. During the weekend, volunteer fire departments around the state will be hosting open houses for anyone interested in joining their department.
“Volunteer fire departments are crucial to our rural Adirondack communities,” said Stec. “In rural towns and villages where our resources are spread thin and paid fire departments are not a possibility, these brave individuals are our only protection against fires and other emergencies. Their sacrifice, bravery and sense of community keep us safe every day.”
According to FASNY, volunteer firefighters save New Yorkers roughly $3 billion in taxes each year. Unfortunately though, volunteer firefighter numbers have been dwindling. Many rural departments are in dire need of volunteers, and some localities who can afford it have established paid departments.
“It’s alarming to see such a decrease in volunteers,” said Stec. “Volunteer fire departments save us billions in tax dollars each year, and many of our local communities cannot afford paid departments. I strongly encourage anyone interested in volunteering to reach out to their local department and see if they are participating in next week’s Recruit NY initiative so they can attend the open house. Our volunteer fire departments need all the help they can get, even if your local department is not participating, if you are interested head over to your local firehouse and inquire about the process.”
