Thiele: Comprehensive Contraception Coverage Act to Bolster Women’s Health Passes Assembly

“The federal Affordable Care Act (ACA) provides universal access to free contraception services because it is an important component to women’s rights, as well as to their health and well-being. Unfortunately, some insurance companies have been limiting this access.

“When there is well-timed access to contraceptives, women can make the best decisions for their health. The Comprehensive Contraception Coverage Act (A.8135-B) codifies federal guidelines into New York State law, ensuring all New Yorkers can obtain the contraceptives they need at no cost.

“The bill requires insurance companies to cover all Food and Drug Administration-approved categories of contraceptive drugs – including emergency contraception – for free. Additionally, the measure covers men’s contraceptive choices and also prohibits the review process some insurers use to delay and deny coverage.

“The Assembly will continue to promote equality and protect women’s health to ensure fairness and opportunity for all New Yorkers.”
