Governor Signs LaValle, Thiele Bill to Reduce Speed Limits in East Hampton and Sag Harbor Villages

State Senator Ken LaValle and State Assemblyman Fred Thiele today announced that Governor Cuomo has signed legislation the two State Legislators authored which would allow the Villages of East Hampton and Sag Harbor to reduce the speed limit on select Village streets in instances when other engineered traffic calming measures are not feasible to implement.

The legislation (S.2926-B/A.4264-B), signed into law as Chapter 426 of the Laws of 2016, will allow the Village of Sag Harbor to reduce the speed limit on Main Street, Bay Street, Madison Street and Jermain Avenue to 20 miles per hour, and the Village of East Hampton to reduce the speed limit on King Street, McGuirk Street, Middle Lane, Mill Hill Lane and Meadow Way to 20 mph. Both Villages had approached the State Legislators with said request.

Narrow and congested Village roadways can prove to be dangerous, especially in the busy summer season. The addition of new traffic calming measures is not always feasible due to landscaping configurations and desired community character. In these cases, the best way to achieve the safest streets possible for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians is lowering the speed limit.
