Thiele Announces Correction Officer Exam

Assemblyman Fred Thiele (I-Sag Harbor) announced that the recruitment effort for the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision has begun. A civil service examination will be held for the position of correction officer on February 11, 2017. Applications must be postmarked by December 20, 2016.

“There is always a need for individuals who want a fulfilling career in law enforcement or corrections,” stated Thiele. “The State Department of Corrections offers their employees a competitive salary and excellent benefits, while working in a challenging environment and providing them the opportunity to serve their communities.”

To qualify, you must be 21 years or older, a U.S. citizen and a resident of New York at the time of employment acceptance, and possess a high school diploma or GED. Appointees must also have passed medical and psychological screenings, as well as a background investigation. Conviction for a felony automatically disqualifies anyone from becoming a correction officer. Misdemeanor convictions or violations of law may prevent correction officer appointment.

The starting salary for a correction officer trainee is $40,590 per year, which increases to $42,695 after six months. Following successful completion of the one-year correction officer traineeship, the salary increases to $48,889 annually.
