Assemblyman Dinowitz Requests Parking Meters on Manhattan College Parkway and Post Road be Changed from 12 Hours to 2 Hours to Help Local Businesses

Bronx, NY – The parking spaces just off Broadway at the intersection of Manhattan College Parkway and Post Road allow for 12 hours of parking for only $8 dollars. This disallows local residents from parking there and visiting businesses on Broadway as there are cars that are parked at the spaces for the entire day.

Currently, there are a total of 26 parking spaces just south of the Burger King on Broadway where one can park for 12 hours for only $8 dollars, a discount from the usual rate of $1 dollar for 1 hour. This is an extremely long amount of time to be able to park, much longer than the usual 1 or 2 hour metered parking for most of the community. It is likely that this unusual schedule was determined before Manhattan College installed a parking garage for their commuter students so that they had somewhere to park for long periods of time while they were in class. However, with the installation of a parking garage for students and staff at Manhattan College it seems that most of the 12 hour metered parking is used by people from outside the city and they are getting it at discounted rates as well.

After speaking with local business owners on Broadway Assemblyman Dinowitz requested that the Department of Transportation change the meters and parking hours from the 12 hours to 1 or 2 hour metered parking to give businesses a boost in their ability to entice customers to park nearby.

“The 12 hour parking means people can leave their car there, near businesses, for the entire day and it prevents people who might wish to park there, and visit the businesses on Broadway from doing so,” said Assemblyman Dinowitz. “With 1 or 2 hour parking, businesses can see many more consumers come in and out during the day.”
