Blankenbush Supports New York Farmers during National Dairy Month

A Legislative Column from Assemblyman Ken Blankenbush (R,C,I-Black River)

Although this year’s legislative session is drawing to a close, I am still hard at work fighting for our community and local interests. I feel it is only appropriate that during National Dairy Month, I announce my co-sponsorship of a bill which will help farmers make their farms more environmentally friendly by preserving the quality of water and soil. Farming is a very grueling business, one that has no guarantees as drought, flooding and fires could wipe out a farmer’s entire business in a few moments. There are also seasons where, while production is going smoothly, sales are down. Despite these possible issues, these farmers come back year after year working hard to provide for their families and communities, which is why we must help them in any way we can.

Farms, which take up over one-quarter of the land in New York, and the farmers who maintain them, are an important part of our local economy. The New York dairy industry is world renowned and something New Yorkers should be proud of. It is crucial we continue to support our farmers who want to become more environmentally conscious. We shouldn’t say no to them wanting to improve their businesses in a way which will have a positive effect on consumers and the natural environment.

Our farmers deserve the most highly-qualified and knowledgeable professionals to help them with these practices. Those at the Soil & Water Conservation Committees in New York are helping our farmers continue to be a successful part of our economy. This bill, which has already passed the Senate, will implement environmental protections quickly and without breaking the bank. This will allow farmers to continue working to provide your family locally-grown, farm-fresh produce, milk, eggs and meat.

Many people might not even think of the hard work it takes to get so many products in a consumer’s hand. We all rely on farmers in one way or another, whether it’s by buying directly from the source or at the grocery store. These hard-working farmers deserve our aid, which is why I encourage others to support and sponsor this bill to help improve both their businesses and our environment. I will continue to work diligently until the end of session to get this important bill passed as my way of saying thank you to our local farmers.
