Blankenbush: Quality Broadband Access Should Be Available To All New Yorkers

A Legislative Column from Assemblyman Ken Blankenbush (R,C,I-Black River)

The world is changing, and access to information has become faster and easier than ever before. What once required weeks of study and research is now easily accomplished with a few clicks. There is no denying that technology and access to information is moving full-steam ahead, and it is important that we deliver these capabilities to all New Yorkers.

In a world which relies heavily on modern technology, it is hard to believe that there are people or places with little to no access to the internet. I have supported the New NY Broadband Program since it first began in 2015. Now, two years later, the program is just starting Phase 3, and while thousands of families and businesses have received access to high-speed broadband, some of the people who need this project the most are not being reached.

Though Gov. Cuomo says that 98 percent of New Yorkers will have broadband commitment, there are still over 150,000 homes without access. Just like these communities’ internet service, this is too slow for our normally fast-paced world.

Regional Economic Development Councils are required to submit plans to New York state, which identifies areas with poor or no internet access, collectively recognizes demand in residential, institutional and business sectors, determining the best way for across-the-board quality access in a cost-efficient manner and using state-owned assets to the fullest advantage. With $500 million in new funding being made available to expand high-speed broadband access to underserved and unserved areas, this project should be moving a lot quicker considering it began two years ago.

It is now 2017, quality internet access should be available to all New Yorkers, no matter where they reside. The fact that there are still areas with limited or no access to the internet is unacceptable. In a country as successful and advanced as the U.S., quality broadband should be available to all of our citizens.
