Let’s Have a Talk

A Column from Assemblyman Ken Blankenbush (R,C,I-Black River)

Labor Day has come and gone. Summer vacation is officially over, and the sound of school bells ringing can be heard across the state. While the frenzy of the school year has just gotten underway, it is important we take a moment and speak to our students about some of what our country is going through at this moment in time.

From the clashes we see on the news each night between American citizens across the nation, to the natural disasters devastating our southern states, America is in a tender position. Our young people may have questions about what they see, and it is important we are there to provide the best answers we possibly can.

Whether we like it or not bullying, has been a part of schooling for centuries. It is a persistent problem that we know exists, but likely don’t hear about until it has gone too far. While as your assemblyman I can work to pass legislation that addresses the issue of bullying, the best solution to this problem begins at home.

It is important we have a discussion about acceptance and kindness with our young children, and let them know that no matter what they see on TV, violence is never the answer. It is also imperative we let our children know the importance of speaking out against what they may see going on in the shadows of the school. The administrators and educators of our school have a lot on their plate, and any extra set of eyes can be of use in the fight against bullying.

This time of the year can be scary for many kids, and we must do our best to make the transition as easy and smooth as possible. Take a moment and have a talk.

I hope everyone from the teachers to the students; staff and the parents have a smooth and problem-free start to the school year. Let’s make this year as productive, educational and fun as possible.
