Assemblywoman Jean-Pierre Takes Decisive Action to Address Amityville School District Budget Crisis

Assemblywoman Kimberly Jean-Pierre has been actively engaging with key stakeholders to address the ongoing budget crisis facing the Amityville Union Free School District (UFSD). In light of recent developments, AM Jean-Pierre is committed to ensuring that the students, teachers, and parents of the Amityville UFSD receive the necessary support and resources.

"I cannot overstate the gravity of the situation facing the Amityville School District, nor the profound impact it has on our students, parents, and community at large. This crisis is not just a matter of numbers on a budget sheet; it's about the hopes, dreams, and futures of our young learners, and the trust placed in us by families and educators.” said AM Jean-Pierre.

The Amityville UFSD has faced significant financial challenges, stemming from mismanagement by the previous administration and unforeseen costs. Additionally, a lack of transparency from the school board concerning continued budget concerns amplified the ongoing deficit. Notably, the district encountered a budget shortfall after utilizing temporary federal funds for new staff hires during the COVID-19 pandemic, which was further exacerbated by exceeding the special education budget by over $1.3 million. “These are not mere setbacks,” said AM Jean-Pierre.

“They are stark reminders of the balance required in managing the resources entrusted to us by our community. It's a testament to the fact that our actions today shape the educational landscape of tomorrow. I’m extremely disappointed in the previous administration and the school board for allowing it to get to this point.” AM Jean-Pierre finished.

“I reached out to state officials and stakeholders the moment the district announced the staffing cuts. I have since held ongoing discussions with the State Education Department, Western Suffolk BOCES, and the district. As a result, both SED and BOCES agreed and recommended that the district hire a fiscal consultant. Superintendent Talbert came to these discussions fully prepared to implement any and all recommendations to remediate the crisis, and immediately hired the consultant as a result. We have the utmost confidence that Dr. Talbert’s experience has well-prepared her to work with officials and stakeholders towards a solution for the school district’s budget issues.” said AM Jean-Pierre.

AM Jean-Pierre has also been proactive in securing additional support for the district, advocating for state funding to cover consultancy costs and a short-term financial stimulus as a part of the state budget process. "We are working tirelessly to ensure the Amityville School District receives the support it needs to overcome this challenge," AM Jean-Pierre said.
