Assemblywoman Jean-Pierre: New Yorkers Deserve Protection Against Domestic Abusers

“For far too long, our nation has lived with the looming fear and tragic effects of gun violence. Men with a history of violence, specifically against women, committed nine of the 10 deadliest mass shootings in United States history,1 and nearly half of American women who are murdered are killed by their intimate partners.2 The link between the two is clear. That’s why I wholeheartedly support the governor’s common-sense proposal to require criminals convicted of domestic violence crimes to surrender all firearms. In fact, I voted on a similar measure earlier this year.3

“We need to keep guns out of the hands of abusers and prevent more senseless gun tragedies. Everyone deserves to feel safe, whether in our home, at work or in school. For the 4.5 million American women whose intimate partner has threatened them with a gun and for the millions who live with that fear unspoken, this legislation sends a clear message.4 We hear you and we will do what’s right to take a stand against threats, violence and harassment.

“I hope that this renewed effort by the governor will help us work together and institute needed change. I’ll never stop working to keep our families and communities safe.”
