Blake calls on Assembly to Provide $250,000 Grant for Institute for Family Health/Bronx

February 16, 2018

Dear Speaker Heastie,

We respectfully urge the Assembly to provide $250,000 in the proposed FY 2018-2019 Executive Budget for the Institute for Family Health/Bronx Health REACH grantee of the Creating Healthy Schools & Communities Program.

Creating Healthy Schools & Communities is a program administered by the New York State Department of Health which funds 26 grantees in 46 counties across New York State, including the Bronx, Manhattan (Harlem) and Brooklyn. The Institute for Family Health/Bronx Health REACH is the grantee in the Bronx. They currently work with 90 schools in 4 school districts and with 30 CBOs and 30 food retailers in community led initiatives to increase healthy eating and more physical activity.

Creating Healthy Schools and Communities grantees are collaborating with individual schools and with school districts to implement school wellness policies. They are also collaborating with community based organizations, health advocates and small businesses to implement worksite wellness initiatives, increased access to healthier food, and safer streets for pedestrians and cyclists through Complete Streets initiatives. Schools, community and faith- based partners are increasingly able to help transform the environment both within schools and within their surrounding communities into places where children and adults can lead healthier lives.

The continuing funding of $250,000 will ensure that the Institute for Family Health / Bronx Health REACH can continue to help residents become healthier by providing necessary training, technical assistance and support through the Creating Healthy Schools & Communities program. Therefore, we respectfully ask the Assembly to provide $250,000 for the Institute for Family Health/Bronx Health REACH in the 2018-2019 Executive Budget.

Thank you for considering this request.
