Assemblyman Michael J. Cusick and the NYC Department of Finance Hosted Homeowners & Tenants Enrollment Event

February 14, 2018

Today, February 14th, Assemblyman Michael Cusick (D-63rd Assembly District) and the New York City Department of Finance hosted a Homeowners & Tenants Enrollment Event. The event took place at the Todt Hill Friendship Club, located at 184 Schmidts Lane, between the hours of 11am-2:00pm. Representatives from the NYC Department of Finance were present to assist individuals with signing-up for various property tax exemptions and rent programs such as:

  • Senior Citizen's Homeowner Exemption (SCHE)
  • Veteran Exemption
  • School Tax Relief Exemption (STAR)
  • Disabled Homeowners Exemption (DHE)
  • Senior Citizen Rent Increase Exemption
  • Disability Rent Increase Exemption (DRIE)

The event drew in more than 80 Staten Island residents who were able to meet with a NYC Department of Finance representative one-on-one in order to determine whether they were eligible for a property tax exemption or rent freeze program.

“During a time period when Staten Island residents are seeing a dramatic increase in their property assessments, this is a good opportunity to educate my constituents on what programs and exemptions they should be taking advantage of in order to decrease the burden of paying high property taxes” said Assemblyman Cusick. “Also, last year, the State legislature passed a law to increase the allowable income maximum for seniors who were interested in applying for the Senior Citizen Homeowner Exemption. There were good amounts of my constituents who were not knowledgeable of the income increase. This event helped my constituents take advantage of a program that they are entitled to receive.”
