Assemblymember Hunter: New Law Gives Veterans Additional Tax Relief

Assemblymember Pamela J. Hunter (D-Syracuse) announced that legislation she helped pass to permit school districts to offer real property tax exemptions to veterans has been signed into law (Ch. 376 of 2017).

“The brave men and women who have fought for our country deserve to know that they’re being taken care of when they return,” said Hunter. “I’m fighting to ensure they have the benefits and services they courageously earned. Tax relief is one way to help them build a life for their families once they come home.”

The law allows U.S. veterans to receive a property tax exemption for school taxes. Previously, qualified veterans only received partial exemptions that did not include school taxes. As the only female veteran in the state Legislature, chair of the Assembly Subcommittee on Women Veterans and a member of the Veterans’ Affair Committee, Hunter has continuously advocated for veterans, working to expand access to benefits and services.
