Dream Act Pushes Benefits for Illegal Immigrants — What about the Dreams of Our Children?

A statement from Assemblyman Pete Lopez (R,C,I,Ref-Schoharie)
February 6, 2017
“As the son of an immigrant, I believe in the pursuit of the ‘American Dream.’ However, spending state funds on those who broke the law and came to our state illegally is wrong. We have many in Upstate New York who still need assistance in putting their lives back together after Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee took nearly everything from them and working families trying to move forward with their education and careers, yet members of this legislature insist upon providing state tax dollars to those who have broken the law.

“I am a proponent of creating a better, more efficient path to citizenship for those who wish to come to our country in pursuit of a better life, but it must be done legally to collect benefits paid for by New York State residents. We must focus on aiding those hardworking New York families who paid into the system and continue to need a helping hand. They speak of the dreams of illegal immigrants — what about the dreams of our children?”
