Assemblymember Steck to Host Informational Event on Combating Substance Abuse

Assemblymember Phil Steck (D-Colonie) announced he’s hosting an event featuring local experts and resources for those struggling with addiction. The forum will be held on Wednesday, May 18, from 5:15 to 8 p.m. at the Village of Colonie Family Recreation Center, 3 Thunder Road, Albany.

“Heroin and opioid abuse has reached a crisis point, and it’s important that we address this issue as a community,” said Steck. “Addiction does not discriminate; it wreaks havoc on the afflicted individual and his or her family and friends.”

For the informational event, Assemblymember Steck is partnering with The Addictions Care Center of Albany, the National Guard Counterdrug Task Force, the Regional Underage Drinking and Drug Use Prevention Coalition, Colonie Police Department Chief Jon Teale and Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple. Refreshments will be provided.

Assemblymember Steck recently introduced legislation that extends the hospital holding period for detoxification from 48 to 72 hours and creates a 90-day involuntary committal procedure for those who pose a danger to themselves or others (A.9501-A). This bill would ensure that people struggling with addiction get proper treatment, noted Steck.

“Substance abuse and addiction are issues that cannot be solved through incarceration, but instead require a greater commitment of resources toward treatment and prevention,” said Steck.

If you or someone you know is struggling with addiction, the New York State HOPEline is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at 1-877-846-7369.
