Assemblymember Steck: New Law Honors Military Service of NYS Employees

Assemblymember Phil Steck (D-Colonie) today praised the signing of a new law that will allow New York State employees to receive credit in the state pension system for time spent serving in the armed forces (Chapter 41 of 2016). The bill, which was sponsored by Steck and members of both parties, was passed with near-unanimity in the state Assembly in May.

“This law honors the men and women in the state workforce who chose to serve our country in uniform,” Assemblymember Steck said. “It is fitting that this bill removing an obstacle to that service is signed into law following a holiday weekend meant to remind us of the sacrifice that being a service member can entail. I applaud the governor on his decision and commend my colleagues for helping pass this important legislation.”

The new law has long been advocated for by Steck, who sponsored previous versions of the bill that were vetoed in 2014 and 2015. Eligible employees will be able to buy back up to three years of pension credit for the time in the service.

“We’ve been able to expand this program to help all men and women who have worn the uniform and gone on to serve New York State,” Assemblymember Steck continued. “It’s a great thing.”

The governor’s message stated that he was signing the bill contingent on funding being appropriated in next year’s budget to support the law. The Assembly anticipates that will be accomplished, Steck noted.
