"Regulation of day care providers is necessary to provide a safe, monitored environment…have you received feedback regarding specific regulation as being overly onerous or difficult to comply with," asked Assembly Member Rebecca Seawright, Chair of the Subcommittee on Consumer Fraud Protection, of NYS Office of Children and Family Services Commissioner Sheila Poole at a public hearing to examine the barriers to accessing quality child day care and how such lack of access relates to a variety of issues including child development, family stability and the economy.

Biography

Rebecca  Seawright
Upon her election in 2014, Rebecca became the first female Assembly Member to serve the 76th Assembly District representing Upper East Side, Yorkville and Roosevelt Island. Seawright is a longtime advocate for women’s rights and a strong supporter of Women and Minority Owned Business. She has experience with many of the educational issues that confront New York families and is a fervent supporter of public schools. As an Assembly Member, Rebecca is committed to advancing consumer protection, senior citizen rights, environmental protection, and ethics reform as well as increasing government transparency. She is a fighter against discrimination and intolerance at all levels of our society.

To date, Rebecca introduced and passed 10 bills in the Assembly including legislation that implemented an automatic adjustment of child support - saving divorced parents time and money, which was signed into law and featured in the New York Law Journal. She is currently a member of the Banking Committee; Consumer Affairs and Protection Committee; Corporations, Authorities and Commissions Committee; Judiciary Committee; and the Education Committee. Assembly Member Seawright has also been named by the Speaker as Chair of the Subcommittee on Consumer Fraud Protection and is a member of the Assembly’s Workgroup on Operations. She is also a member of the Legislative Women’s Caucus and the Bipartisan Pro-Choice Legislative Caucus.

Previously, Rebecca was the Statewide Director of the National Women’s Political Caucus, and served for five years as the chief of staff for a state legislator. She worked in the Washington, D.C. offices of the late United States Senator Lloyd Bensten and two members of United States Congress, and served as the Assistant District Attorney in Kings County. Rebecca later became a fundraiser for former Texas Governor Ann Richards.

Rebecca chairs the Board of the Feminist Press and the CUNY School of Law Board of Visitors.
