‘The Gray Area’ Discusses How Gov. Hochul’s Budget Proposal Will Effect North Country

Assemblyman Scott Gray (R-Watertown) released the latest episode of “The Gray Area” video series. In this week’s episode, Gray breaks down Gov. Kathy Hochul’s Executive Budget presentation, delivered on Tuesday, Jan. 16.

“One of my biggest concerns is the 4.5% spending increase ballooning the budget up to $233 billion. This trend is worrisome, especially considering this is before the Legislature offers additional spending suggestions of its own. Gov. Hochul talked a lot about crime and the tangential topic of guns, which ultimately concerns individual rights. We should prioritize consequences for criminals rather than infringing on the rights of law-abiding citizens,” Gray said. “There are a lot of issues I will be sure to pay close attention to, including education funding. SUNY assistance is essential, but we must ensure parity with community colleges. Attention to the school aid formula is crucial, with changes impacting districts and potentially leading to a tax shift to property owners. Furthermore, addressing the migrant situation, which is primarily a New York City issue, should not burden New York state taxpayers.”

“Positive components from the budget proposal for the North Country include funds to address homelessness, a critical issue throughout our communities. There are also economic opportunities with respect to the development of Micron. I strongly advocate leveraging the unique strengths of our region to support Micron’s development in New York state. The I-81 corridor, with its strategic location, offers us a golden opportunity by combining land, water and a ready and able workforce to maximize Micron’s presence in our state.”

“Look out for next week’s episode of The Gray Area as we continue to update you on what you care about. We always appreciate the opportunity to serve you and to work with you. Don’t hesitate to call my office staff with questions, comments or concerns—see you soon,” Gray concluded.
