Assemblyman Pichardo: Increases in rent-controlled apartments will hurt families in need

April 27, 2017

“I am extremely disappointed in the Rent Guideline Board’s decision to allow for a rent increase on tenants in rent-controlled apartments. It’s unconscionable that they have told some of the city’s most vulnerable among us that they will make it even harder for them to support their families.

“For too long, landlords have been cashing in and raising rents on tenants who have nowhere else to go. For so many families in the Bronx and across this city who are living paycheck to, this increase will put an unjust burden on their shoulders. At a time when the city is already dealing with issues related to homelessness, this decision will only lead to more. We must fight for more protections against these rent increases so more families and seniors can stay in their homes.”
