Summer Reading Is Critical For Developing Minds
Column from Assembly Minority Leader Brian M. Kolb (R,C,I,Ref-Canandaigua)

The summertime offers so many great recreational opportunities, from camping and hiking, to traveling, local sporting events and so much more. However, it is important to remember, especially for our youngest New Yorkers, that keeping an active mind is just as important as keeping an active body. With a month to go before school begins again, I am encouraging all New Yorkers, and especially our students, to squeeze in some valuable summer reading time.

A good book can transport you to another world. It can motivate you, empower you and offer new ideas and perspectives you would otherwise miss. Reading is exercise for the mind, and with a good book, the possibilities are endless. It is my sincere hope each of you take time and find a novel, a biography or a comic book that stimulates your mind and immerse yourself in a brand new adventure.

LIBRARIES ARE GREAT COMMUNITY RESOURCES

I have long supported New York State's incredible library system. Thanks to the great work of the New York Library Association (NYLA) and library boards across New York, they are unparalleled community resources dedicated to supporting learning and creativity. A pillar of our educational system, libraries offer free, unmitigated access to information. And, they are a great place to connect to the internet for those who normally do not have that ability. Not sure what to read? Your local librarian can help you select skill- and age-appropriate books.

For those interested, the 2018 NYLA Annual Conference and Trade Show will be hosted in Rochester this November. The event will offer networking opportunities, access to new library products and Continuing Education credits from Nov. 7 to Nov. 10.

SUPPORTING OUR LIBRARIES IS VITAL

Too often, budget negotiations begin with a proposal to cut library funding. However, these critical community resources are far too important to financially starve. I have long supported adequately funding our libraries and will continue to be a vocal opposition to any budgetary reductions. I was thrilled to see additional library funding included in this year's Enacted Budget.

As the summer winds down, please be sure to visit your local library. Bring your family for a day of adventuring, learning and relaxing. It will go a long way toward getting those preparing for school ready to tackle another year.

What do you think? I want to hear from you. Send me your feedback, suggestions and ideas regarding this or any other issue facing New York State. You can always contact my district office at (315) 781-2030 or email me at kolbb@nyassembly.gov.
