Support Small Business, Support Your Neighbors

Column from Assembly Minority Leader Brian M. Kolb (R,C,I,Ref-Canandaigua)

Small Business Saturday is the lynchpin of the shop local movement. Nestled between the chaos of Black Friday and rush of Cyber Monday, it offers shoppers a chance to experience the best of their community while also supporting the local economy. I urge each of you to take time this weekend to show your support while crossing off items on your holiday checklist.

More than half of the state’s workforce is employed by small businesses. They are the backbone of the state’s economy and critical job creators that provide New Yorkers with the goods and services they rely on daily—every dollar spent at a neighborhood store or restaurant has an exponential impact on the local economy.

Many of these stores rely on the sheer quality of their products and services and word-of-mouth recommendations to survive New York’s challenging business climate. Small-business owners have shown tremendous resiliency in the face of New York’s lagging economy. They have staked their reputation, and livelihood, on their products. The support they get from local shoppers goes a long way toward ensuring they thrive. They need our support, and not just this weekend.

While this Saturday is a perfect chance to help boost one of the most important facets of our economy, it may also open your eyes to a new outlet you didn’t know about. Small Business Saturday is a great way to show appreciation for your neighbors and develop new and, hopefully, lasting relationships. Shopping local will benefit the owners, it will benefit the community, it will benefit the shopper, and ultimately, it will benefit all of New York.

SUPPORT THE FINGER LAKES REGION THIS SATURDAY

You would be hard-pressed to find a more unique and charming corner of New York than the Finger Lakes Region. It is home to many beautiful wineries, breweries, cideries, shops, restaurants and so much more. I have personally had the luxury of experiencing so many of them during my time living and working in the region, and I can speak firsthand to their quality. I look forward to seeing their many exciting offerings this holiday season.
