The holiday season brings with it so many wonderful things, from family gatherings to shows, music, ice skating and all the other seasonal activities we have come to treasure. Perhaps the most rewarding part of the season, though, is the chance to share with our family and neighbors.

There are a multitude of ways we can help those less fortunate, and not just by donating to our many great charities. Food, clothing or simply giving one’s time goes a long way toward strengthening our communities and supporting those in need. I am continuously proud of the efforts of our local small businesses and other organizations that turn out year after year with immeasurable generosity and kindness.

The need for a helping hand is never more apparent than when the temperatures begin to drop during the winter months. During these times, it is critical we look for ways we can give back. There are numerous organizations in the Finger Lakes Region and throughout the state that provide basic necessities to get through the toughest times. Please consider reaching out to one and inquiring about what you can do to help further its mission.

SUPPORTING LOCAL CHARITIES MAKES US ALL BETTER

The Salvation Army, Catholic Charities and Red Cross all have great programs aimed at helping those in the community. The Geneva Community Lunch Program, for example, provides hot meals for those struggling with hunger. This holiday season, consider sharing some of your resources—it is truly the spirit of the season.

Of course, there are endless ways to contribute. Sometimes, the best gift you can give is a personal one. The holiday season is a time for bonding. Talk to a friend you haven’t seen in a while, a coworker you don’t speak to very often or even the coffee shop employees you see every day. A simple gesture of goodwill goes a long way, and you may be surprised by what you receive in return.
