Fourth of July Is a Time to Celebrate the Importance of Shared Strength, Freedoms

Column from Assembly Minority Leader Will Barclay

The Fourth of July is a day when each American can celebrate the most cherished aspects of our nation’s birth—freedom from tyranny, the value of democracy and independence, and the courage of those who stood up for what they believed to be right. Those timeless ideals are a strong foundation from which we have built our country and this weekend we take time to recognize them once again. This year, let us be sure to reflect upon all that binds us together as Americans and strengthen those bonds as we continue to grow and progress as a nation.

Our Independence Day celebrations this year will likely be very different from the ones we have grown accustomed to, as we are still recovering from the fallout of the COVID-19 outbreak. However, that does not mean we cannot enjoy many of our favorite holiday traditions. Family and community gatherings may be smaller, and spread out a little further, but with proper precautions in place we can safely celebrate this important day with family and friends just as we always have.

One such holiday tradition that returns this year is the City of Oswego’s fireworks show, set for Sunday, July 5. It will take place at the Railroad Pedestrian Bridge, located between the Utica St. bridge and the Bridge St. bridge, at 9:45 p.m. For those interested in viewing, please be sure to observe appropriate social-distancing measures.

Communities across New York, and the rest of the country, each have their own versions of an Independence Day celebration. Celebrations this year may look different, but we must remember the underlying reason we gather has not changed—everyone has the right to freedom and prosperity. This year, let us make a concerted effort to keep that in mind no matter how we choose to spend the Fourth of July.
