Speaker Heastie Continues Annual Statewide Tour, Announcing $250,000 for the Amherst Center for Senior Services with Assemblymember McMahon

Speaker Carl Heastie today continued his annual statewide tour in Erie County, visiting the Amherst Center for Senior Services with Assemblymember Karen McMahon and announcing $250,000 for the senior center. The facility is an important resource for seniors, offering a wide variety of services as well as social programming.

“It was great to be here at the Amherst Center for Senior Services with Assemblymember McMahon today,” Speaker Heastie said. “The center is a hub of activity for seniors here in Erie County – a place to socialize, to learn, to have fun and to access vital services. We will continue to support organizations like this that care for and support our seniors.”

“Thank you Speaker Heastie for joining us here today,” Assemblymember McMahon said. “The Amherst Center for Senior Services is such an important part of our community and provides a place for seniors to come for services they need, as well as fun and educational programming.”

Speaker Heastie and Assemblymember McMahon toured the Amherst Center for Senior Services with Executive Director Melissa Abel. The center provides an array of services for the 15,000 members, including Meals-on-Wheels, transportation, daily lunches, pickleball, billiards, exercise classes, computer and technology classes, lectures, workshops, and many other activities. In addition to the $250,000 announced today, the Assembly has provided funding to help the center maintain and improve services, including $30,000 for training and equipment for wellness programs for seniors, $15,000 for boxing equipment used in a therapy program for Parkinson’s patients and $15,000 for a van for transportation services.
