Speaker Heastie Remembers the Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

People across the nation are finding many different ways to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. More than just a day off or a long weekend, the third Monday of January serves as a reminder to us that the fight for equal rights and justice for all is not over. Each day brings a new opportunity for us to be better, stronger and wiser than the day before. And like Dr. King, we must continue to believe in the greatness of humanity.

While we have made strides here in New York by raising the minimum wage, raising the age of adult criminal responsibility and finally passing the DREAM Act in both houses of the legislature, our work is not yet complete. We must remember the wise words of Dr. King when he said, “Change does not roll on the wheels of inevitability, but comes through continuous struggle.”

The Assembly Majority will continue to embrace his dream and advocate for a New York in which all are afforded the opportunity to succeed – regardless of race, class, creed or gender.
