1 / 3

Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie today joined Assemblymember Carrie Woerner in Mechanicville as part of his fourth annual statewide tour. The pair visited the Mechanicville Area Community Service Center (MACSC).

"This tour affords me the opportunity to meet people from across the state that do so much to keep our communities healthy and vibrant," said Speaker Heastie. "MACSC is doing important work to address food insecurity and provide programs to improve the lives of children and families here in Mechanicville. The Assembly Majority will continue to support MACSC and community centers like it across the state."

"It was great to have Speaker Heastie in my district today to see the work being done to improve our community," said Assemblymember Woerner. "MACSC provides vital programs and services that help so many of our residents from young children to senior citizens."

MACSC's mission is to provide programming that will strengthen community relationships through support, empowerment, recreation and education. Over its many years of service, MACSC has become a true co-location of services enabling them to increase their programs and services to keep up with a growing community. They provide everything from emergency assistance and a food pantry to domestic violence counseling and educational outreach to free income tax preparation to preschool and childcare for working parents.

Through its programs, MACSC has been able to combat food insecurity, going from a single emergency food pantry to providing a free summer lunch program through community partnerships with service organizations, local businesses and local farmers. They are also helping to provide dietary and nutrition counseling and offer cooking classes. This summer they expanded to offer an online food pantry ordering and are working on starting a small food pantry at the local senior center to combat increasing rates of hunger in the elderly population.

MACSC will be celebrating its 50th anniversary later this year.
