Agency Mission

The Interest on Lawyers' Account (IOLA) was established in 1983 to finance civil legal services for individuals who cannot afford such services. The Account also provides funds to assist with the legal needs of the elderly and disabled individuals. Funding for these services is derived from interest earned on trust accounts which lawyers hold on deposit in banks for their clients. The distribution of funds is performed by the IOLA Board.

Year-to-Year Change

The Executive recommends an increase in State Operations funding of $253,000 or 21.3 percent but does not propose an increase in grants to agencies that provide civil legal services.

Legislative Changes

The Assembly makes no changes to the Executive's proposal.
