Agency Mission
The Department of Agriculture and Markets is authorized to foster a competitive and safe environment for food and agriculture in New York State.
Year-to-Year Change
The Executive proposes funding the Department at a level of $86,119,400 in State Fiscal Year (SFY) 1999-2000. This represents a $3,380,800 or 4.09 percent increase over 1998-99. In 1998-99 the Governor vetoed $1,384,000 in aid to localities funding enacted by the Legislature.
Legislative Proposals
The Assembly provides an additional $900,000 in funding to support programs within the Department of Agriculture and Markets. This includes an additional $200,000 to fund additional food inspectors to ensure a safe consumer foods market in New York State. Also, the Assembly provides an additional $200,000 for a Farmland Viability Program aimed at protecting farmlands by improving the economic viability of farms across the State. Finally, the Assembly provides an additional $500,000 for other program funding. Provided below is a summary of Assembly additions to the Department of Agriculture and Markets.
