Albany, NY – In response to a mass shooting that took place in Rochester last night which claimed one person’s life, Assemblywoman Michaelle Solages, Chair of the New York State Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic and Asian Legislative Caucus, and Senator Jeremy Cooney released the following statement:
“It feels like all too often, we hear about lives lost to gun violence as we make our way through the summer months.” said Assemblymember Michaelle C. Solages, Chair of the NYS Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic, and Asian Legislative Caucus. “Two young women, Tyasia Manning and Phylicia Council, were killed and five others were injured while enjoying the weekend at Maplewood Park in Rochester this Sunday. While this incident is currently under investigation by the Rochester Police Department, it pains me to see this insensate violence claim innocent lives while leaving trauma and sorrow in its wake.I commend the Rochester Police Department for their rapid response and continued efforts in this investigation to bring the assailants to justice.”
Senator Jeremy Cooney said, “The entire Rochester community is mourning the loss of two of our own following the horrific shooting Sunday night. This senseless violence is unacceptable and has no place in any community. I’m praying that the other victims make swift and full recoveries and I’m ready to work with my colleagues to help prevent tragedies like these from happening in Rochester and across New York ever again. This means more resources for mental health interventions, local law enforcement, and violence prevention programming.”
