Albany, New York January 20, 2023 - Today, Members of the Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic, & Asian Legislative Caucus released the following statement in recognition of the Lunar New Year, also known as Chinese New Year, which begins on January 22nd and marks the start of the Year of the Rabbit:
“As we welcome in the Lunar New Year, I want to extend my warmest wishes to all those celebrating in New York State and across the country. This holiday is a time for families and communities to come together, reflect on the past year, and look forward to the future,” stated Chairwoman Assemblymember Michaelle C. Solages. “I also want to take this opportunity to recognize the significant contributions of the Asian American community to our city, state, and nation. The Asian American community has played a vital role in shaping our history and continues to contribute to our economy, culture, and society significantly. Let us also use this occasion to reaffirm our commitment to building a more inclusive and equitable society for all.”
“Every year, more and more communities across the state are learning about and sharing in what it means to celebrate the Lunar New Year. This is a time to celebrate together regardless of race, color, or creed, when we can set aside our differences and all that divides us and focus instead on what unites us by sharing our common hopes and dreams for the future. The Lunar New Year is an auspicious occasion and long-standing tradition here in New York and around the world that brings families, friends and communities together to celebrate a new year of health, happiness and good fortune. Wishing all peace, health, happiness and prosperity during the Year of the Rabbit!” stated Senator John Liu.
“As one of the most cherished traditional holidays for our Asian communities, the Lunar New Year is a great time to welcome all New Yorkers to share in the rich historical and cultural contributions of Asian Americans in New York,” said Assemblymember Grace Lee. “Lunar New Year marks a time for renewal, prosperity, happiness, and health. It is a time for friends and family to gather, reflect on the past year, and look ahead to what we can achieve in the new year.
