MOURNING the death of Kevin Sheil, past President
of the Fraternal Order of Police
WHEREAS, It is with deep sorrow that the New York State Assembly
acknowledges the passing of Kevin Sheil, past President of the
900-member Putnam Chapter of the Fraternal Order of Police, who passed
away on Sunday, January 19, 2025, at the age of 82; and
WHEREAS, Kevin Sheil was a man dedicated to service, and he will be
remembered fondly by his family, friends, and community for his
unwavering commitment to his work, his loved ones, and the betterment of
those around him; and
WHEREAS, Following a distinguished military career as a U.S. Marine,
Kevin Sheil went on to serve with honor as a member of the New York City
Police Department, dedicating many years to protecting and serving
others; and
WHEREAS, Sheil's son, Kevin, fondly remembered his father for "his
dedication to work that was matched by his dedication to family and his
community;" his son Michael eloquently stated that his father's life
embodied the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson: "The purpose of life is not
to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate
and to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well";
and
WHEREAS, Kevin Sheil was a devoted family man, taking immense pride
in the accomplishments of his children and grandchildren, and imparting
to them the values of kindness, integrity, and the importance of
community service; his grandchildren were his greatest joy, and he was a
constant source of support and encouragement, attending their events and
games; and
WHEREAS, Kevin Sheil's daughter Tracey remarked that her father's
life was a "tapestry of love, service, and community," and that his
friendly demeanor and engaging conversations will be missed by all who
had the privilege of knowing him; and
WHEREAS, Kevin Sheil is survived by his children Kevin, Michael,
Tracey, and Danean, along with four beloved grandchildren; he was
predeceased by his wife, Michelina, who passed away in 1998; a funeral
mass will be held on Friday, January 24, 2025, at St. James Church in
Carmel, followed by his burial at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne,
where he will be laid to rest alongside his beloved wife; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
extend its heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of Kevin
Sheil, and honor his remarkable life of service, leadership, and love;
his dedication to his family, his community, and his country leaves an
enduring legacy of kindness, integrity, and compassion; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the family of Kevin Sheil and to the Putnam Chapter of
the Fraternal Order of Police, in recognition of his life well-lived and
his invaluable contributions to the community and beyond.
