memorializing Governor Kathy Hochul to proclaim
February 5, 2026, as Kashmir American Day in the
State of New York
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to memorialize
Governor Kathy Hochul to proclaim February 5, 2026, as Kashmir American
Day in the State of New York, to be observed by the Kashmiri community
statewide in recognition and celebration of Kashmiri cultural identity
and heritage; and
WHEREAS, The Kashmiri American community has demonstrated
resilience, perseverance, and civic engagement, and has established
itself as an important and valued part of New York's diverse immigrant
communities; and
WHEREAS, Kashmiri people living throughout the world speak the
Koshur language and practice distinct and ancient traditions rooted in
Islam, Hinduism, and Sikhism; and
WHEREAS, The recognition of Kashmir American Day honors a unique
cultural identity and storied history with origins in the Himalayan
foothills and the Pir Panjal Range, and serves to preserve and promote
Kashmiri heritage for future generations; and
WHEREAS, The State of New York is committed to upholding human
rights, including freedom of religion, movement, and expression, as
guaranteed by the United States Constitution, and to recognizing the
rich cultural, ethnic, and religious diversity of its residents; and
WHEREAS, New York State has long been a leader in advancing
inclusion, equity, and social justice, and this Legislative Body
acknowledges that the recognition of Kashmir American Day reflects those
enduring values; and
WHEREAS, By honoring Kashmiri cultural identity, this observance
promotes greater public awareness and understanding, while offering the
Kashmiri American community recognition and affirmation of its
contributions and aspirations; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
memorialize Governor Kathy Hochul to proclaim February 5, 2026, as
Kashmir American Day in the State of New York; and be it further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the Honorable Kathy Hochul, Governor of the State of New
York; and the American Pakistani Advocacy Group (APAG).
