BILL NUMBER: A1017
SPONSOR: Paulin

TITLE OF BILL:
An act to amend the public health law, in relation to authorizing the
health care and wellness education and outreach program to develop and
disseminate information regarding drug-induced movement disorders

PURPOSE:

disorders will be developed by the Department of Health in consultation
with the Office of Mental Health and disseminated by the Department of
Health.

JUSTIFICATION:
Patients receiving treatment with medications for their mental health
conditions may be at risk of developing a drug-induced movement disorder
These involuntary movement disorders are caused by medications that help
control dopamine, such as first- and second-generation antipsychotics
commonly prescribed to treat people living with mental illnesses. Some
drug-induced movement disorders, such as tardivedyskinesia; are persist-
ent, irreversible- potentially disabling neurological conditions charac-
terized by uncontrollable repetitive movements of the face, torso, or
other parts of the body. While untreated involuntary movements can be
stigmatizing and debilitating, the rates of undiagnosed patients living
with drug-induced movement disorders remains high.

LEGISLATIVE HISTORY:
This is a new bill.

BUDGET IMPLICATIONS: None noted.

EFFECTIVE DATE:
This act shall take effect on the same date and in the same manner as a
chapter of the laws of 2024 amending the public health law relating to
establishing a drug-induced movement disorder screening education
