  TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the criminal procedure law, in relation to granting peace officer status to animal control officers of the county of Schuyl- er   PURPOSE OR GENERAL IDEA OF BILL: To grant peace officer status to animal control officers of the county of Schuyler   SUMMARY OF SPECIFIC PROVISIONS: (1) Modifies section 2.10 of the criminal procedure law, as amended by adding a new subdivision 87; to grant peace officer status to animal control officers employed in Schuyler County (2) States the effective date.   JUSTIFICATION: This bill proposes to confer peace officer status upon animal control officers who are employed by the County of Schuyler. However, it is important to note that this subdivision does not permit animal control officers to carry, possess, repair, or dispose of firearms unless they have obtained the necessary license in accordance with section 400.00 of the penal law.   PRIOR LEGISLATIVE HISTORY: 2023: A.5334 Passed Assembly/S.5236 Referred to Codes   FISCAL IMPLICATIONS: None to the State   EFFECTIVE DATE: This act shall take effect immediately.

        AN ACT to amend the criminal procedure  law,  in  relation  to  granting
          peace  officer  status  to  animal  control  officers of the county of
          Schuyler
 
          The People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and  Assem-
        bly, do enact as follows:
 
     1    Section  1.  Section  2.10 of the criminal procedure law is amended by
     2  adding a new subdivision 87 to read as follows:
     3    87. Employees of the county of  Schuyler  serving  as  animal  control
     4  officers for such county; provided, however, that nothing in this subdi-
     5  vision  shall  be  deemed  to  authorize such animal control officers to
     6  carry, possess, repair or dispose of a firearm  unless  the  appropriate
     7  license therefor has been issued pursuant to section 400.00 of the penal
     8  law.  For  the  purposes  of  this subdivision, the term "animal control
     9  officer" shall have the same meaning as defined  by  section  twenty-one
    10  hundred forty of the public health law.
    11    § 2. This act shall take effect immediately.
