An act to amend the highway law, in relation to dedicating a portion of
the state highway system to Specialist Jason Johnston
PURPOSE OR GENERAL IDEA OF BILL:
To rename a portion of a state highway constituting route 31-A between
Powerline Road and route 98 in Orleans to "Specialist Jason Memorial
Highway"
SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS:
Section 1: Designating a portion of the state highway system as the
"Specialist Jason Memorial Highway."
Section 2: States that the commissioner of transportation will provide
the installation and maintenance of signage of the state highway system.
Section 3: Establishes the effective date.
JUSTIFICATION:
This bill is at the request of Orleans County. It would honor the memory
of U.S. Army SPC Jason Johnston who was killed while serving the Afghan-
istan War on Terror in 2009.

AN ACT to amend the highway law, in relation to dedicating a portion of
the state highway system to Specialist Jason Johnston
The People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assem-bly, do enact as follows:
1 Section 1. The highway law is amended by adding a new section 344-r to
2 read as follows:
3 § 344-r. Portion of the state highway system to be dedicated to
4 Specialist Jason Johnston. All that portion of the state highway system
5 constituting state route thirty-one-A from its intersection with Power-
6 line Road to its intersection with state route ninety-eight in the town
7 of Albion, county of Orleans, shall be dedicated to Specialist Jason
8 Johnston.
9 § 2. The commissioner of transportation shall provide for the instal-
10 lation and maintenance of adequate signing of the state highway system
11 as dedicated pursuant to section one of this act, provided that such
12 signing shall state "Highway Dedicated to Specialist Jason Johnston".
13 However, to avoid confusion and to limit any possible disruption of
14 commerce, the dedication called for pursuant to section one of this act
15 shall be one of ceremonial nature and the official name of such highway
16 shall not be changed as a result of this act.
17 § 3. This act shall take effect immediately.
